As of October this year, the University of Wroclaw is planning to launch as many as eight new programmes of study, including five bachelor programmes.
Programme of Study: Militaria Studies
Those passionate about history will be able to choose to follow Militaria Studies or History in the Public Sphere. Both programmes have been designed for students that are not interested in following regular programmes in History.
“We are seeking ways to attract young people and the new programmes are one of the methods to make university studies more appealing”, says Jacek Przygodzki, PhD, Spokesman of the Wroclaw University. „Historic anniversaries provide a perfect opportunity to organise open air events that promote the knowledge of history. Various groups that reconstruct historic events are being established. The programmes we have created are designed for their leaders and organisers, that is, people who wish to promote the knowledge of history.” The History in the Public Sphere programme provides courses in the Polish and general history, archive studies and historical education.
The Faculty of Historical and Social Studies is also planning to launch the Special Needs Education programme.
Passing fashions
Bachelor programmes in Italian Studies, Microbiology and Land Management and master's programmes in Environmental Management and Image Communication will be launched with the beginning of a new academic year.
The University Spokesman: “We must continuously respond to the changing needs and expectations of our potential students and develop our offer in such a way that young people who contemplate the prospect of studying in Wroclaw had a wide range of programmes to choose from.”
How can one estimate whether a new programme of study will turn out to be attractive and whether the trend will have an enduring effect?
“This can be verified only after the admission process. Fashions for specific programmes of study are impossible to predict in the long term. Two years ago, we had numerous applications for programmes in Internal Security and European Diplomacy, but the interest has already subsided”, says the Spokesman. “By contrast, the programme in Image Communication has proved to be a great success. Even though media related studies are generally popular, the third result that this particular programme achieved in terms of the number of applicants per place immediately after the launch of the programme has been something of a surprise. We will find out which programme is going to be a hit this year in July, after the first stage of the admission process.
Currently, the University of Wroclaw offers sixty programmes of study provided by ten different faculties.
