The jubilee edition of Days of Fantasy will take place from the 27th till the 29th of June 2014 – the “Zamek” (Castle) Culture Centre invites everybody to fly together beyond the realms of imagination. This year the corridors of the castle will be filled with fans of "Game of Thrones" and lovers of steampunk and cyberpunk. The convention will also be attended by a pantheon of well-known writers: Andrzej Sapkowski, Łukasz Orbitowski, Licia Troisi and many other persons creating the contemporary world of fantasy.
The Days of Fantasy (called DeeFy by their participants) convention in Wroclaw is currently the biggest fantasy event in Lower Silesia and one of the biggest events of this kind in Poland. Every year it attracts around 1,500-2,000 lovers of fantasy both from Wroclaw and from other parts of Poland. The first edition of DeeFy took place already in the pre-Facebook area – in 2004. Since then successive nine events of Days have been attended by hundreds of guests: writers, editors, drawing artists, game creators, actors, film directors, and artists from Poland, Europe and the USA.
In Gothic climates and outfits
The 10th Days of Fantasy are blazing trails once again. This year’s convention is dominated by steampunk and cyberpunk.
Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy referring to the original roots of the genre: the 19th-century scientific novel and the 18th-century Gothic horror. It is an offshoot of cyberpunk, where visions of the surrounding world are based on electronics. The steampunk reality is full of steam-driven cyborgs, gear wheels, transmission gears or airships. The fashion connected with this genre makes use of costumes referring to the Victorian England, which are decorated with toothed wheels, valves or pistons, thus creating an incredible mixture. This year’s Days of Fantasy will be an opportunity to admire participants in these incredible outfits. However, more classical costumes will also be present, as fans of Star Wars and cosmic style also announce their presence at the event.
Cult productions, cult writers
The jubilee edition of DeeFy will be even more diverse thanks to the presence of fans of a slightly different style related to a TV series that has recently beaten records of popularity. In the Zamek Culture Centre, a nationwide rally of fans of the “Game of Thrones” series and the “Song of Ice and Fire” saga by G.R.R. Martin. The rally is jointly organised by fanpages "Ubieram się na czarno, bo jestem z Nocnej Straży" (I wear black clothes because I'm from the Night Watch) and "Pieśń Lodu i Ognia PL" (Song of Ice and Fire PL). Consequently, the programme of the event will contain a special set of lectures, panels and competitions devoted to "Game of Thrones”. A special guest of the 10th Days of Fantasy will be Andrzej Sapkowski, the most popular Polish fantasy writer and the creator of one the best Polish export products – the figure of Geralt. The organisers confirmed also the participation of Marzena Sowa, Licia Troisi, Łukasz Orbitowski, Jacek Piekara and many other writers, authors of comic strips and games, or scientists.
Fantasy in technology, on streets and in games
Many attractions will also be prepared by people who find ways to introduce fantastic ideas into our reality. Students from TK Games – the scientific circle of the Wroclaw University of Technology will present a sensor glove and an Occulus Rift helmet - the devices that will help us to steer computer programs by means of our thoughts.
The comic strip section also looks promising. Its star will be Przemysław Truściński, one of the best known Polish drawing artists, who has received numerous awards such as the Distinguished Contribution to Polish Culture award or the Silver Cross of Merit. The comic strip section will provide an opportunity to learn more about graffiti and the street art.
Fans of games will also have something to delight in. In the vault of Zamek, RPG sessions will be held, whereas its surroundings and the park will be occupied by participants of role-playing (LARP) games.
