The new building of the Capitol Musical Theatre received the Grand Prix Award in the Beautiful Wroclaw Competition for the best architecture design in 2013.
The results of 24. edition of the competition organised by the City of Wroclaw, Society of Friends of Wroclaw, Society of Polish Architects and Lower Silesia District Chamber of Architects were announced in the latter's headquarters, a revamped preschool building located at the WUWA housing estate.
"We organise the competition to identify the best works of Wroclaw's architecture," said Piotr Fokczyński, Municipal Architect, who also ran the competition gala.
Mr Fokczyński pointed out that over 100 buildings had been either awarded or received distinctions in all the editions of the Beautiful Wroclaw held to date.
"They demonstrate that we as the residents of Wroclaw have nothing to be ashamed of," he said. "It's going to be a nice trip. You can see these buildings for yourselves. And I would like to dedicate this trip all of those who are unhappy with Wroclaw's architecture.
Against eyesores
This year's awards and distinctions were presented in four categories: public building, apartment building, single-family residential building and engineering building. A total of 32 building were nominated out of 330 investments that were completed in Wroclaw last year.
They were examined by the following committee: the Municipal Architect Piotr Fokczyński as President and Jan Paluchniak, Wojciech Gryczyński, Andrzej Poniewierka, Marcin Major and Aleksander Szarapo as its members.
Apart from awards, distinctions were also presented. "These distinctions are not a consolation prize of any sort. They are to demonstrate that their winners have joined the elite," remarked Piotr Fokczyński.
As he commented on the verdict in the single-family residential building category, the Municipal Architect also added that their designers and investors were facing a difficult task because their respective budgets were much smaller than those of public investors.
"We have to promote such designs, especially now when eyesores are almost at every corner," said Mr Fokczyński.
New Capitol Theatre: tradition and modernity
Konrad Imiela, Head of the Capitol Musical Theatre was glad to receive the Grand Prix Award for the new theatre building.
"It was a real challenge to combine tradition with modernity. It would be much easier to demolish the old building and develop everything from scratch," said Mr Imiela to stress the satisfactory collaboration with Warbud, who executed the project.
Anna Szarycz, Wroclaw's Deputy Mayor, extended thanks to all the winners of the competition. "You contribute to the beauty of Wroclaw. I do not mean only its space, but also the quality of life," she remarked.
